Soft Circuitry and Synthesizers description for NIME 2012 updated

05.08.12 posted by .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)

FSP will be teaching Soft Circuitry and Synthesizers at New Interfaces for Musical Expression again this year in Ann Arbor, MI on Sunday May 20th.

We will be going over how to create soft counterparts to the hardware components that are used in basic circuitry and interactive design.
All students will learn from building force sensing resistors (FSRs), bend sensors and a free form sculptural sensor using sheep’s wool, conductive threads and fabrics and resistive materials such as thin plastics and foam.

stochastic performance

The Fortune Teller project is coming along in these last few days, and while I am initially designing it to work as a simple controller with no other rhyme or reason to it, I’d eventually like to take advantage of the fact that it does reference an algorithmic game of chance. If you recall from childhood, these fortune tellers usually have colors written on the outside flaps, with 8 numbers written on the inside surfaces. The idea is to pick a color and then spell that color out, opening and closing the fortune teller for each letter called out. Then you pick one of the numbers on the inside, open and close the fortune teller that many times, and finally pick one more number to see what your fortune is under that flap. I’m sure there are variations on how to play this game, but that’s the basic method. Seems like there could be a fun way to apply this to introducing some stochastic quality to a performance.

▓▒░░░ Textiles and Electronics Workshop ░░░▒▓

1pm - 4pm FRIDAY the 17th @ The Tank
Part of In/Out Fest
$25 - Includes materials to build a voltage control oscillator circuit and your own soft variable resistor + take home sampling of materials. Please read on for detailed workshop description.

In this workshop, Sarah and Lara will demonstrate how to create textile sensors and how to integrate these sensors with simple signal processing circuits for controlling sound output. There will also be on hand samples of handmade conductive felt, crocheted stretch sensors, conductive batting and machine sewn resistors for participants to check out and build from, which will be the focus of this workshop.  After discussion of construction techniques and some show and tell, they will walk the workshop through building a simple sound producing circuit and how to connect it to a soft sensor.  Participants should also feel free to bring in their own simple circuits in lieu of constructing one with the group.

Ticket Info:
The workshop is $25 - this includes materials to build a VCO circuit and a soft variable resistor + take home sampling of materials

If you also wish to see the night performances (highly recommended!), you can purchase single day passes online or pay at the door. $15 for single day/ $25 for both.

I will be playing again with Peter Kirn and Matt Ganucheau at Handmade Music, a night of homemade circuits, homebrewed software and handmade instruments. This is an open nerd gathering and noise making event, bring your own creations or just come for the live acts! Peter, Matt, Sarah and I had the pleasure of playing at the Fairytale Fashion show on Feb. 24th. We provided the soundtrack for the evening and now we are having a reunion in honor of handmade instruments. Official details here.
